The Butterfly Screen is in a room at Wansbeck General Hospital designated for End of Life patients and their relatives. It is called the Wansbeck Oasis, and provides a calm environment for people to be together in a space that does not feel like a hospital. The idea for the screen was developed to create imagery that is positive, and not religious, but reflective. The colours were chosen to be warm and autumnal, and the quotations across the top were developed with a focus group form the patients and their relatives. The butterflies are engraved onto the surface of the coloured glass. The immediacy of the engraved line, like drawing, gives the piece movement and life.
